What is Sheep Freeze Branding?

Sheep Freeze Branding has been in development for the past 10 years by Dr John Steinfort as an ethical and efficient promotion of breech health for the lifetime of the sheep. The results of the Sheep Freeze Branding process are healthy, fast growing lambs without setback resulting in a plain breech with bare skin evident around the tail edge.

Sheep Freeze Branding is the application of liquid nitrogen to excess skin on the breech area of a sheep. It is a technique used to reduce the susceptibility to flystrike using a patented application system to tent the skin and apply a measured amount of liquid nitrogen to the targeted area. The skin then goes through a period of degeneration then regeneration forming an eschar that falls off leaving an area of skin with reduced wrinkle.

The Sheep Freeze Branding process works on the freeze thaw cycle that we commonly associate with wart removal in humans. The difference however is the Sheep Freeze Branding application process tents the skin and applies the cryogenics, freezing the total depths of the skin. This tertiary skin freeze results in the targeted skin being numb post process. This is the foundation of the animal welfare and animal production benefits.
